The University of Sussex sports teams will face-off against the University of Brighton on Wednesday. Varsity is held annually and covers Badminton, Basketball, Rugby, Football, Hockey, Netball and Ultimate Frizbee. This year’s event bears the tagline “Goliath…meet David” referring to the biblical tale where the unlikely underdog defeats the giant as, in recent years, Sussex has found it hard to match their Brighton counterparts. However, this year, the event being hosted at the University of Sussex campus and the home teams are feeling cheerfully optimistic.

Past teams show current lot how it’s done
March 16, 2009 by Dave Owen · Leave a Comment
On the second Saturday of March, in cold and dreary conditions, Falmer Sports Complex played host to both current and former Sussex sportsmen and women in the rebranded: past versus present competition (formerly old boy/girl). This year there was a trophy up for grabs which ensured the competition in the sports played was always going to be fierce. Clearly the returning athletes wanted to teach the current crop how their respective sports should be played, whilst the current squads did not want to be shown up by their former team-mates and peers.

Sussex men rescue 1-1 draw
Sussex fought from a goal behind to draw 1-1 in a scrappy affair with Royal Holloway. After conceding a sloppy goal in the first half, it was difficult to see a way back for Sussex against a disciplined Holloway unit. However, a resurgent Sussex battled back in the final 25 minutes, and Holloway’s lead was deservedly cancelled out in the 83rd minute by Sam Gittens. Sussex could, and perhaps should, have gone on to win the game, but a share of the spoils means that Sussex retained third place in the table.

First win of the season for Rugby Men’s 2nd denied in final-minute mêlée.

Drama and controversy marked the end of this otherwise mundane game, as Sussex Men’s 2nd narrowly lost out to a late Imperial Medic try, to lose 10-7. As Sussex trudged off the field of play after being condemned to an eight successive defeat in the South Eastern Conference, there was evident rage at referee Jim Knight who it appeared had denied them their highly sought-after victory.

Sussex withstand late fight back to claim first win
November 24, 2008 by Alastair Hill · Leave a Comment
In a largely scrappy encounter, Sussex University tenaciously edged out a resolute Royal Veterinary College to secure their first win of the season.
With both teams without wins in their respective leagues, a victory in this cup tie would serve as an opportunity to revitalise fortunes. Largely courtesy of Robbie Dowling’s impeccable form with the boot, it was Sussex who were able to hold out for a 19-10 win.

Sussex Men’s rugby give a gritty performance against England Deaf
November 17, 2008 by Alex Smith · Leave a Comment
Sussex University Men’s Rugby travelled to East Grinstead on Sunday (9/11/08) to play a match against England Deaf. In conditions more akin to trench warfare than rugby, it was perhaps quite appropriate it was Remembrance Sunday, and the one minute’s silence before the game in memory of those who fought in the First World War was immaculately observed.

Sussex rugby 2nd defeated in cup derby
November 3, 2008 by Kieran Karolak · Leave a Comment
‘We were undone by a decent player this afternoon,’ said 1st team captain and acting coach Pete Holmes in the wake of Wednesday’s 29-10 defeat to Brighton 2nd. For sure, one man could account for the 19-point deficit alone: Ryan Tracey, Brighton University’s right-winger. His four-try haul perhaps made the difference on the score sheet, but realistically this Brighton team was too good for Sussex. Read more
