Top 5 Valentine’s Day songs
February 9, 2009 by Ben Hobson · 1 Comment
- ‘Let’s Get It On’ – Marvin Gaye
It is physically impossible not to want to have sex within five seconds of this track coming on. Scientists proved this when they played it to some (formerly) coy mice. - ‘Wonderful Tonight’ – Eric Clapton
Old Slowhand has never played so slowly – or so beautifully. - ‘I Would Die 4 U’ – Prince
The pop-pervert serves up a luv song even the text-message generation can understand. Gr8! - ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’ – The Smiths
“If a double-decker bus / Crashes into us / To die by your side / Is such a heavenly way to die”: Morrissey finds a gloomy, verbose way of telling someone that he cares. - ‘Business Time’ – Flight of the Conchords
“You know when I’m down to just my socks it’s time for business that’s why they call them business socks, ooh!”. Classic. If you don’t get the reference then you are strongly advised to head over to YouTube right away.
Top 5 anti-Valentine’s songs
February 9, 2009 by Ben Hobson · 1 Comment
- ‘Kim’ – Eminem
“BLEED BITCH BLEED!” Eminem screams at the end this infamous song about killing his wife. Can’t get much more un-romantic than that now can you? - ‘Caught Out There’ – Kelis
“I hate you so much right now / I hate you so much right now / AAARRRGGHHH!!!” Kelis gets one back for the girls. - ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ – Joy Division
For all those who are single on Valentine’s Day, don’t feel too down. As Ian Curtis reminds us, most relationships end in misery after all. - ‘Necromancer’ – Gnarls Barkley
“It’s naughty, very naughty necrophilia / without a care I’m compassionate about killing her” sings Cee-Lo with relish. Sick bastard. - ‘No Distance Left To Run’ – Blur
A heart-wrenching song inspired by Damon’s break-up with Justine Frischmann of Elastica.

Music (Brighton arts this year…)
January 19, 2009 by Ben Hobson and Eleanor Griggs · Leave a Comment
Now that the ‘Christmas Hits’ CD has been packed safely away to gather dust for another year, it’s that time again to look ahead to 2009 and start getting excited about all the fresh and wonderful sounds the new year will be bringing to our ears. Or not. Rather depressingly, the list of artists being bandied around at the moment as “the next big thing” makes for some thoroughly underwhelming reading. Read more
Getting explicit with XX Teens
January 19, 2009 by Eleanor Griggs · Leave a Comment
If nothing else, XX Teens certainly possess an impressive knack to make one feel as though they’re single-handedly leading music journalism into ruin. A bunch of comedians in disguise, it’s either that or they’re a couple of crisps short of a full packet. Backstage at the Concorde 2, where the London based five-piece are opening for The Kills on the final date of their UK tour, the band pick at a modest banquet of grapes, Coca-Cola and Kronenbourg – and spare a few minutes to offer The Badger some alternative answers to questions they’re probably bored of answering. Catapult, Cha Cha & Riot Riot @ The Prince Albert, 11th November
The Prince Albert pub is one of the few venues that has consistently been in the centre of the Brighton music scene, showcasing the best of Brighton’s creative talent including The Kooks and The Maccabees. Tonight, The Albert hosted three bands hoping to emulate these local heroes. Read more
Alice Russell – Pot of Gold (Pinnacle)
November 24, 2008 by Melayna Lamb · Leave a Comment
As a big fan of Quantic, the Columbia based DJ and producer with whom Alice Russell has worked, I had high hopes for this album. Well before the likes of Amy Winehouse and Duffy, Alice Russell has been creating music harking back to the sounds of 60s and 70s funk and soul. Read more
