Hundreds of people from all over the country met in Brighton on May Day, 4 May, to protest against war, capitalism and the arms trade. The protest was organised by the Smash EDO movement, which for years has been campaigning against the EDO/ITT arms factory based in Moulsecoomb. Read more

The Big Yellow Big Lemon Bus runs on vegetable oil
The Big Lemon Bus that travels between the University of Sussex and Brighton, has won the Dandelion Award that “recognises the extraordinary efforts of businesses throughout the UK to improve their own and others’ performance on issues surrounding sustainability.” The Dandelion marks the first award for “The Big Lemon,” which is the brainchild of Tom Druitt, one of a new wave of “ecoprenuers.” Read more

Local family faces deportation

An Algerian family, who had been living in Brighton since 2002, were deported back to Algeria on 20 February with their two-year-old child. Reports claim the Souhalia family was initially seized from their home in the early hours of the morning on 11 February. They were issued a (IS151A) removal notice and moved to the Yarl’s Wood immigration prison prior to a planned deportation to Algeria on Tuesday 11 February. However, pressure from campaigners at Heathrow resulted in the family being removed from the flight at the last minute and returned to Yarl’s Wood. Read more
Brighton shops braced for recession

Many shops in Brighton are facing closure due to the UK recession. One area affected most severely is St. James’s street, which has for many years been a thriving centre for independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Several of the street’s independent shops and restaurants, including the Camping and Outdoor Centre, Party on Brighton and The Saint Restaurant have all closed within the last twelve months. A fare increase in Brighton bus prices

Changes to bus fares in Brighton that came into place in the New Year have seen the cost of a Saver ticket rise by 10p on last year’s prices. The cost of a single journey remains at £1.80 while a saver ticket, which provides unlimited day travel now costs £3.60 – a 40p increase from the same ticket two years ago, in spite of decreasing fuel prices. ‘Careless cyclists’ to blame for own accidents say Sussex Police

1 in 3 bicycle accidents last year were caused by cyclists
Cyclists in Brighton and Hove are to blame for a third of the accidents they are involved in according to Sussex Police. Inspector Phil Clarke commented to The Argus last week that: “There is an increasing problem in the city with some cyclists riding irresponsibly and sometimes unlawfully.” Figures reveal that last year a total of 131 cyclists suffered injuries as result of collisions, 23 of those cyclists, sustaining serious injuries. Brighton’s cold age pensioners

Vulnerable people living in the Brighton area are being left in the cold after losing out on a government heating allowance scheme.
Pensioners, severely disabled people and those with young children are eligible for the Cold Weather Payment of £25 per week, but only if living in an area where temperatures are recorded at 0°C or below for seven consecutive days. As Help the Aged warns that the death rate rises by 1% to 2% for every temperature drop of 1°C, many vulnerable people are being refused financial support with their heating. Read more
