New law attempts to clear out students

Students in Sussex could be seriously affected by a new law that would see undergraduates in groups of 3 or more unable to rent shared accommodation. The contentious government legislation was proposed earlier this year and is currently being considered by John Denham, the communities and local government secretary. The law would apply nationwide, specifically concerning areas in the country which have a dense student population.

War against the HMOs?

Friends is the most repeated show in television history. Whenever there is nothing on, we can all agree to engage in the most common form of televised procrastination and settle down and watch a nice episode of Friends, the show that for ten years sometimes successfully – often hilariously – defined the sit-com genre. Last Tuesday, after somehow finding new laughs in an early episode I must have seen 4 times already, I felt prompted to ask my house-mate: why was there never a successful British Friends?

Council wants to limit student housing

Landlords of student properties could be prevented from creating HMOs, (Houses in Multiple Occupation), out of ‘family’ homes reported The Argus last Friday. This review of student housing comes as a result of the meetings that happened before Christmas between students, Brighton residents and Brighton and Hove city Council members. The meetings addressed the mounting hostility between students and their neighbours with plans to tackle it. Read more
