The University of Sussex sports teams will face-off against the University of Brighton on Wednesday. Varsity is held annually and covers Badminton, Basketball, Rugby, Football, Hockey, Netball and Ultimate Frizbee. This year’s event bears the tagline “Goliath…meet David” referring to the biblical tale where the unlikely underdog defeats the giant as, in recent years, Sussex has found it hard to match their Brighton counterparts. However, this year, the event being hosted at the University of Sussex campus and the home teams are feeling cheerfully optimistic.

Past teams show current lot how it’s done
March 16, 2009 by Dave Owen · Leave a Comment
On the second Saturday of March, in cold and dreary conditions, Falmer Sports Complex played host to both current and former Sussex sportsmen and women in the rebranded: past versus present competition (formerly old boy/girl). This year there was a trophy up for grabs which ensured the competition in the sports played was always going to be fierce. Clearly the returning athletes wanted to teach the current crop how their respective sports should be played, whilst the current squads did not want to be shown up by their former team-mates and peers.

Dire Brighton plummeting fast
February 2, 2009 by Luke Ralph · Leave a Comment
Every generation of Brighton and Hove Albion supporters enjoy a day out at Wembley. The last time the club made it to Wembley was way back in 1991 in a play off final, the time before that Wembley appearance you have to go back another 8 years to 1983 when Brighton faced the impossible task of Manchester United in the F.A cup final. That very same season as reaching the F.A cup final saw The Albion relegated from top flight football. Perhaps this is an unwelcome sign of things to come, a highly fancied Brighton team at the start of the current season, expected to push for promotion and by all means achieve it, now very much find themselves in a relegation dogfight. The only saving grace of the whole season so far is The Seagulls are only 90 minutes away from a return to Wembley in The Johnstone’s Paints Trophy Final. Read more

October 20, 2008 by William Roe · Leave a Comment
Sussex University football’s 1st team have got their season off to a solid start with a 1-1 draw away to St. Mary’s University. On a damp, grey October afternoon a solitary goal from midfielder Dimal Luta in the first half was enough to earn Sussex a point. In a hard fought game, in which Sussex captain Tom Cannell was taken to hospital, stand in captain Bill Ward felt ‘we had more in the locker’ and was optimistic about the forthcoming season. ‘Proud members of the Blue Square Premier League,’ the sign outside the Dripping Pan pronounces, and if you knew where Lewes Town Football Club had come from you would understand why. For a tremendous footballing story is unfolding just a few miles up the road from us, and I would presume few are aware of it. Read more
Cup giant-killing masks internal difficulties for homeless Brighton
October 6, 2008 by Tom Davis · Leave a Comment
Having been without a stadium for 10 years, the prospect of another season in English football’s third tier is no great affront to Brighton and Hove Albion’s pride, who have spent a decade fighting bankruptcy, the secretary of state and attempting to gain planning permission to finally find a new ground.
