Course cuts continue

Swine flu suspected at Sussex

A Mexican chef who works at the University of Sussex was recently quarantined on suspicion of carrying swine flu. He was tested twice for the virus and both times the results were negative. Gabriel Gutierrez, who works at the institute of Development Studies, became ill after returning home from a holiday in Mexico. Read more
Spate of thefts in Sussex library

The University of Sussex library was the scene of a spate of thefts over the Easter holidays. In a series of thefts a number of laptops, mobile phones and wallets were stolen. The incidents took place in the library in the week before Easter in which students were working hard on dissertations and essays. All of the items were stolen when individuals left their desks leaving their possessions unguarded. Read more

The new University Chancellor was announced last week as Sanjeev Bhaskar OBE. A writer and actor, Bhaskar is famed for his roles in TV comedy Goodness Gracious Me and his leading role in comedy chat-show The Kumars at No. 42. Read more
Atheist movement looks to mobilise students

Controversial posters on buses have sparked a prolonged debate about atheism
The AHS launched last week to activate students in resistance to what they view as “growing pandering” towards religious groups. AHS is the abbreviated name of the National Federation of Atheist, Humanist and Secular Student Societies. In its manifesto the organisation states that it aims to “encourage and facilitate the creation of new atheist, Humanist and secular student societies and groups,” as well as supporting existing student societies that it feels have not had a platform to present their views on a national and international level. ‘No space’ for product design students in need of new venue

Final year product design students at the University of Sussex no longer have a campus venue to house their end of year show in June. The final show, used to display the students’ concluding degree projects, accounts for 50 per cent of the final degree mark, and is essential for making industry contacts and eventual employment. The usual exhibition space on campus, InQbate, cannot be used this year due to health and safety restrictions sparking a mass of fundraising and a frantic hunt for an alternative venue in Brighton, which comes at a great cost. Students debate military-funded bodies

Last Tuesday saw Arts A2 fill up for the big debate: ‘Should military funded bodies stay on campus?’ Supporting the right of military funded bodies to stay on campus were Sussex URNU (University Royal Navy Unit) members Georgie Codd and Chris Rogers. Speaking against the motions were Tom Wills, on behalf of the Stop the War Society and Raz Meldau on behalf of Students Against the Arms Trade.

Occupation ends in victory

Last Tuesday, on January 27th, the student occupation of the Arts A2 lecture theatre declared victory. The protest, which had been held to highlight the recent and continuing atrocities in Palestine, had been going on for over a week before both sides were willing to sign an agreement. Read more
