Fry condemns Tories’ homophobic links
October 30, 2009 by Hannah Pini · 1 Comment
Steven Fry spoke out last week amid concern over the Tories’ links with Poland’s Law and Justice Party. The party, which was founded in 2001 by the Kaczyński twins, has been condemned for its racist, anti-Semitic, nationalistic, and mostly homophobic views. The Tories joined forces with the party earlier this year in the European group, European Conservatives and Reformists.
Tongue tied

Hammer and Tongue is a monthly poetry slam and performance, showcasing local spoken word talent at Komedia. This, however, was no ordinary Hammer and Tongue, this was Hammer and Tongue collaborating with Slip Jam: B; the well established Brighton hip hop “open decks/open mikes” night and the presence of a DJ really put a different spin on things.
Casual comedians

Looking suitably casual, as their name would suggest, and lounging on leather sofas, I sit with James Hamilton and Dave Newman, two Sussex students turned comedians. We are waiting for the third member of Casual Violence, the comedy group I am meeting today in promotion for their upcoming sketch show The C**T Monolgues (16th & 17th October, Marlborough Theatre). Meeting as members of the university drama society SUDs the collective was put together as an opportunity to create comedy sketch shows where they could ‘be free to explore avenues they had never gone down before’ without the limitations imposed by a society format.
Dr Philip Harvey welcomed by student protests

The appointment of Dr Philip Harvey as Registrar and Secretary at the University of Sheffield has been met with student protests. Dr Harvey held the identical post here at Sussex for four years, until his departure at the end of last academic year.
Last Wednesday, the Sheffield Activist Network (SAN) held a bitter “welcome party” for Dr Harvey. On the facebook event for the party, organiser Dickie Yates wrote: “A party just for a new member of staff you say? That’s a bit excessive, isn’t it? Ah, but this is no regular appointment. For this is the man who has been the bane of the lives of radical students, university workers and anyone else who might happen to get in the way of top brass management.

Women’s Football Wet Weather Woe
October 28, 2009 by Amanda Larg · 1 Comment
The women’s football team played their first match of the season against Sussex Downs College on Wednesday. Despite losing and getting soaked to the skin, the team showed that they can play good football. Throughout the match, lack of concentration at points, the fact that it was the first time most players were on the pitch together, terrible weather conditions and unfitness lead to a negative result at the end of the match. However, some good football was played and it was a great chance for the new members of the team to get to know everyone in preparation for the first BUCS match of the season next week
